My thoughts on 2011

The time has come when we are given a fresh start. A blank canvas. A new chance. A new year. 365 days to do with whatever we see fit.

Or is it?

Someone once said
You decide every moment of every day who you are and what you believe in.
You get a second chance, every second.
I haven't tied myself to a long list of resolutions and I'm not starting out on an ambitions fitness plan either. 2010 was a big one for us, with really big highs at our wedding in June, to a couple of thumping lows with the passing of some loved ones. Everyone was bracing themselves for 2010 - we were promised be a big year and I don't think anyone was untouched.

We have our plans and goals for 2011, there are some things we hope to achieve by the end of they year, and the plan is in place, but my own 2011 intention is to take it slow and keep it simple. I'll be doing things because they make me happy this year, and won't be committing to too much or too many. If I feel that I'm starting to miss the little details that make life grand then I'll know it's time to take a step back and take my second chance. The beauty is this - we don't need a New Year to make a change or start something new - we get that second chance, every second of every day - take it if you need to.

Thanks to Me from iwrotethisforyou for the quote.

First rule of farmers markets...

... don't make a list. Whatever you do! I had the best intentions and a very well thought out menu plan but of course half of the things I bought last week weren't there this week! So - budget yes, list no. This week I spent over $40 on meat, $7 on sorbets and about $30 on vegies and considering I'm still on my own this week it seems a bit much but some of it was for making Rossi's food - and I'm not touching those yummy sorbets until Trav gets home. There, that's better.
Bella Pasta & Dolci are from Rosebud, they bring along a delicious selection of fresh pastas - so fresh they're even making them at the market and an amazing range of sorbets and ice cream. Almost everything was gone by the time I got there so I snapped up little Lavender & Strawberry and Orange & Basil cups to hide in the freezer. Their other flavours include Chocolate & Strawberry, Apple & Honey and Lemon & Mint. And on top of their fantastic range of products they are just wonderful people too!
Another new face was Peninsula Fresh Organics, apart from the gorgeous little breakfast radishes I picked up, they have a wide range of other vegies including heirloom cabbage and baby kohlrabi - but again - you've gotta be quick!

I'm already looking forward to next week - I'm learning so much!

Early Bird Challenge Day 5

The plan

Rise: 6:30
make tea & breakfast
Red Dress: hand-sew hem. Done!
make lunch
shower
dress
Ride to work: 7:30

Well you might have noticed that this didn't happen. It went more like this

6:20 alarm
7:15 up, shower, dressed
7:40 breakfast
8:00 chatted to Trav, fed rossi, packed bag
8:25 left for work.

This week has been a very strange one, I realise that I could have put all other pressures aside and kept to my plan but it just didn't to bother me very much. Not a habit yet. Next week I'll be aiming for a short walk with Rossi each morning, no other extra tasks.

Early Bird Challenge Day 4

The plan:

Rise: 6:30
make tea & breakfast
make lunch
shower
dress
Drive to work: 7:30

This is how it went in real life
6:20 Alarm
6:46 up, shower
7:00 breakfast and emptied dishwasher
7:15 dressed, make up, teeth
7:40 chatted to Trav
8:10 took phone call from close friend
8:25 left for work

OK. Let me start by saying it's been a rough week. A combination of Trav being home ill and major work issues have resulted in a complete drop of motivation. I slept in a bit this morning and dragged my feet, partly because I didn't feel a particular rush to get to work and partly because as Trav has been sick, I wanted to catch up on things and clean the house up before I left. I could have easily ridden but found myself with the same problem of something to wear. I'll ride tomorrow and will have my outfit ready to go tonight. I've allowed myself this lapse but there's no sense dwelling on things. I'll do a better job tomorrow :-)

Early Bird Challenge Day 3

The plan:

Rise: 6:30
make tea & breakfast
Red Dress
make lunch
shower
dress
Drive to work: 7:30

This is how it went in real life
6:20 Alarm
6:35 up, shower, dressed
6:50 chatted to Trav about my extrarordinary day yesterday
7:10 breakfast, made lunch
7:30 back upstairs, dried my hair, makeup, teeth, shoes
7:45 left for work (drove)
8:08 arrived at work.

Once again I didn't do my dress as I'd worked on it last night, it felt like a rushed morning but I still arrived at work 20 minutes early. On a good note - Mum mentioned last night that she (already an early bird) was inspired by my mention of my change of habit to also get a head start on her day - the ripple effect!
I think I'll stick to my 6:30 am plan for the rest of the week (with no extra tasks) and next week I'll make it earlier and include a walk with Rossi each morning, he'll like that!

Early Bird Challenge Day 2

The plan:

Rise: 6:15
make tea & breakfast
Red Dress
Bakery
make lunch
shower
dress
Drive to work: 7:30

Yesterday I decided I'd need an extra 15 minutes if I wanted to do any 'extra tasks' so my alarm was set for 6:10 and after an 11pm bedtime I snoozed until 6:25. Still an improvement on yesterday.
6:25 up: shower, dressed, makeup
6:55 walked to bakery - rolls just went into oven, come back in 15m.
7:00 Breakfast, wrote 2 thank you letters and updated our fridge-board.
7:30 Back to bakery, picked up hot rolls!
7:35 brushed my teeth, grabbed some fruit.
7:40 left for work (driving today)
8:00 arrived at work 30 minutes early!

So I didn't work on my dress as I'd unpicked and pinned it the night before. This morning felt quite relaxed, as I was fully dressed and ready I could linger at the table and ease into the day.

Early Bird Challenge Day 1

Well after two 4:30 am starts in a row on the weekend I definitely felt ready to begin my 6:30am challenge this week. Let's have a look at what today's plan was and how I did

Rise: 6:30
make tea & breakfast
Red Dress: unpick collar & tidy top edges
make lunch
shower
dress
Ride to work: 7:30

My alarm was set for 6:25am and I was up at 6:35 after the news and washed my hair.
6:50 breakfast
7:05 I looked at the time and consciously knew that to leave by 7:30 I'd need to be upstairs drying my hair and dressing but I unpicked half of the collar instead.
7:25 dried my hair and stood in front of the wardrobe for 10 minutes deciding what to wear. Packed my bags.

7:45 I was downstairs ready to go, forgot something - back upstairs then downstairs chatting to Trav.

7:55 Left for work on my bike.

What went wrong?

I saved time by not making my lunch but rather than sticking to my ultimate goal of leaving by 7:30, I didn't want to miss the opportunity to work on my dress. After all I'd gotten up early to do that hadn't I? Well, no - my main goal was to have more time for myself and to prepare in the morning and to leave by 7:30. I added little tasks to keep me motivated and getting more things done. I definitely did waste time (could have picked my clothes out the night before) so I can improve a bit but I don't really have the time for the extra tasks just by getting up at 6:30. Tomorrow I'll try a 6:15am start - then I'll be able to use that extra 15 minutes for whatever I like, while not rushing the rest of my morning.
On an exciting achievement note - I was really pleased that I rode this morning, it's a first for me on a Monday and I felt it gave me a great start to the week.

See you bright and early tomorrow!

Early to rise...Morning Goal for Sept 27 - Oct 1

I've been thinking a lot about my early-rising goal for next week, and with the help of zenhabits, I've decided to set a weekly goal which will give me another pressing reason to actually get out of bed when the alarm goes off.

Goal for next week is - finish that Red Dress! I lost interest in this sewing project months ago after it needed multiple adjustments, and it soon fell off my radar. Well it wasn't ready for last summer but it certainly will be for this one- breaking the tasks into small daily chunks should also make the goal feel more achievable so I'm looking forward to having a new dress in my wardrobe next weekend!

Here's my very specific plan (just to help get started)

Next week's goal: Complete RED DRESS

Monday 27th

Rise: 6:30
make tea & breakfast
Red Dress: unpick collar  & tidy top edges
make lunch
shower
dress
Ride to work: 7:30

Tuesday 28th

Rise: 6:30
make tea & breakfast
Red Dress: resew collar matching up to edge of button-hole side
make lunch
shower
dress
Drive to work: 7:30

Wednesday 29th

Rise: 6:30
make tea & breakfast
Red Dress: sew press-stud on
make lunch
shower
dress
Ride to work: 7:30

Thursday 30th

Rise: 6:30
make tea & breakfast
Red Dress: measure and pin hem
make lunch
shower
dress
Ride to work: 7:30

Friday 1st

Rise: 6:30
make tea & breakfast
Red Dress: hand-sew hem. Done!
make lunch
shower
dress
Ride to work: 7:30

Can't wait for Monday!

To get more done, just slow down

The wake up call (bad pun) is already working. Tonight, instead of going across town to browse some accordions at a music store and then racing back to drop into Spotlight on the way to the video store to pick up Coco Avant Chanel and then getting home at 8 and finding that I don’t even have time to make dinner and paint my nails while watching the dvd before picking up my husband and his mates after the footy. I’ve decided to just make it easier on me.

With my new direction there’s no need to take a trip across town in peak hour to see some accordions that I’m not planning on buying yet. It’ll be Spotlight, video store then home for me. I’ll enjoy baked bean jaffles for dinner and enjoy my dvd with Rossi on my lap as I knit along. Simple.

One busy bee

Now and then we get subtle and not so subtle reminders that we just might be taking on a bit too much. This week I got 3. First was a strange dream where I was pregnant twice at the same time. Then I came down with a bit of a cold and then, probably the least subtle one came when my husband queried my interest in learning a musical instrument. Fair point actually. Where was I going to find time to learn and play the accordion if I can’t even make time to ride my nice bicycle to work? And the more I thought about it – the more I had to agree that all I do is rush around, walking too fast, cutting others off at the shops, flitting here and there trying to get everything on my to do list done. In fact on our honeymoon I had to consciously make sure I walked next to him, not dragging him along behind me. Is this the simple life? It’s definitely not easy, calming, or simple.

Considering I’ve got 5 books on the go, a half finished dress to sew and a pair of hardly started legwarmers to knit where do I think I’d get the time to dedicate to a new hobby? I have the concentration span of a little black pug and am forever thinking up ‘quick and easy’ little projects to do instead of doing what I’d originally planned. A few years ago I learned how beneficial list writing, goal setting and habit forming skills are in ensuring things get done. This is how I planned and completed my decluttering mission, and how I’m creating a cleaning routine at home (from absolutely-nonexistent to at-least-presentable).

In my effort to begin simplifying things I started with a full declutter of our house – and now I’m setting cleaning tasks which will hopefully become habitual so at least those everyday duties will soon be on autopilot and we’ll be able to enjoy a lovely clean home.

It’s clear that the next thing I need to improve is my time management – I seem to fluff around for ages before actually climbing into bed, so it ends up being 11:30 instead of 10pm and of course that doesn’t help in the morning when I’m supposed to be getting up for work. Over the next two months I’m going to aim for a 10pm bedtime on work nights and I’ll keep track on a chart on my wall (I love charts!). This won’t be easy - I’ll have to constantly watch myself as I know I’ll very easily get sidetracked with a ‘great new idea’ or I’ll start something that takes about 3 times longer than I’d thought. The other catch is that we might have up to 2 nights a week when we’re out for dinner (next week it’s 3!) so because there’s no such thing as a ‘normal’ week, it’s going to take more than the average 28 days to form this new habit.
I won’t aim for anything else than getting to bed by 10pm and getting my chores done. If I want to ride my bike, I will, if I want to finish sewing that dress (in time for this summer) then I’ll do that too. I think this is going to be an excellent exercise in learning how I use my time and how I want to use it. I really enjoy ticking things off my list, but hopefully instead of ending up with a huge list of things that I’ve thought up but haven’t given myself the time to do, I’ll have a carefully considered list of just a few things that I really see benefit in, and can fit into my life. But as I find time here and there to read a few pages or knit a few rows, it won’t be because ‘I’ve got to get it out of the way’ it will be because I actually enjoy it.

And in a couple of months, if I’ve found a different pace and have been able to make the best of my time, I might then start to think about picking out my accordion – confident that I’ll have the time to dedicate to learning and that it won’t sit in a case at the bottom of the cupboard after 3 months. From what I’m seeing it might take that long to find one anyway!

I don’t want to be one of those people with 20 half finished projects – who finds it easier to drop something than to see it through to the end, and I’m looking forward to separating the ‘time issues’ from those which are due to a genuine lack of interest.

Speaking of busy bees, today I came across Queen B – run by a wonderful woman named Cate, who produces pure Australian Beeswax candles in NSW. I’m so inspired by her vision is to rid Australia of paraffin and soy based candles, one household at a time – and her mission to ensure that her candles outperform all others.

Did you know that one of the true benefits of beeswax is that it’s an instant air purifier ioniser? It cleans and freshens the air as it burns – not just masking other odours but actually filtering dust, germs and other toxic nasties out of the air! I love a multitasking product! What a perfect replacement for our ‘scented’ candles and air freshener. Australian, natural and good for you! I can’t wait to receive my candles Queen B!

One box to go!

Our uncluttering project has almost come to an end - just    one    last    box    to go! Another boot full of books, toys, vases and other odds and ends has made its way to our local Savers and I can see the floor in our study! We've made so much room in the cupboard that we've actually got bare space! Not a good reason to try to fill it with new stuff though.

This has been a pretty ruthless journey - and I'm feeling so much lighter as I walk around our home these days. Now we need to be just as ruthless when letting new things inside!

I see a light

It was so great dropping a whole carload of useful to others  but useless to us stuff off on Friday - I felt instantly freed. Saurday and Sunday we worked on the shed. Well it's more like a upboard in the garage but we like to talk it up. It's so easy to collect lots of extra stuff, those things that you might need one day, or someone was giving away - and it all adds up.
Before: there were shelves but not much order to what goes where, so usually it would be as easy as opening the door and tossing something in without looking - and closing the door before it all collapsed on you@
After: Our tool box has been replaced with a proper tool chest with drawers - no more gingerly poking around for the hammer between saw blades - it's now all accessible. We've got 2 boxes of things to return to mum's place, 4 items for the op-shop and a binload of at least 2 years of nonsense. What a way to finish the weekend!

I'm planning to wrap this thing up on Wednesday - bookcases and study on Tuesday, buffet on Wednesday - cant wait!

It's a new decade!

I've started thinking about this differently, looking to the past and planning for the future.
In the last decade I accomplished many things

  • I completed my degree
  • Moved out of home
  • Rented by myself
  • Saved the deposit for and bought my first house with my then darling boyfriend of 5 years.
  • Experienced 3 very different jobs - taking learnings from each one
  • Searched for and found our sweet little dog, finally our own!
  • Saved for my own beautiful bicycle with my casual job
  • Sewed many gifts for friends and a few outfits for myself too
  • Married my darling husband
In the next decade I'm looking forward to ticking off the following (in no particular order)

  • Visit Europe
  • Learn to knit - started
  • Learn to play accordion
  • Build our sustainable, energy efficient, beautiful straw bale home in the country
  • Build a kitchen garden and chook run
  • Begin our own little family
I'm sure this list will continue to evolve, and I'm so excited to get stuck into it! Bring on the Twenty Teens!

Where were you going to be?

My house uncluttering project is well underway again - and yesterday I found a blast from the past as I reached into the darkest depths of our hall cupboard. Among some old old Star-Shots photos (shudder) and some graphics projects, I found a couple of '2008 High School Reunion' predictions - one of which yours truly featured in. My head was stuck on a model's body and the caption read 'Fresh from her overseas travels - she made it!'

There was only a couple of things right about the picture - my hair was as short then as it is now and I really feel that I have made it - if it means making my own decisions and surrounding myself with inspiring people and happy memories. Not that there's nothing more to do. No, it just keeps getting bigger and better! As far as the overseas travels part - that's still on the to-do list. It was interesting seeing what my peers thought would become of me in 10 years time - where did you expect to be 10 years after high school?

Uncluttering took a back seat tonight as I ironed my way through the study - then listed some of my half-decent treasures on eBay. That's usually something I'll put off forever so it felt really good having it under control, photos and all - hopefully I'll earn a few bucks to put towards our very own copy of Brian Hodge's Building Your Straw Bale Home. Sounds like a good deal to me...

      5 words...

There's been a few changes around here lately. Strangely since returning to Melbourne married and 30 last month, I've also come back with an entirely fresh set of ideas. Well fresh for me. No longer am I collecting more and more bags/shoes/clothes/jewellery that I think I need, but I've started clearing out... using the mantra I picked up on my first very inspiring visit to zenhabits

      Does     this     simplify     my     life?

Nope? Out with it then! Room by room I've been more ruthless than ever before - uncluttering to my heart's content and down to the essentials. I've kept some items aside for friends who I think might enjoy them, sold some on eBay with a few great ideas of how to spend the cash, and there is a bootload of goodies to drop of to our local op-shop with still 3 rooms to go!
It's incredible how we hardly ever (or never) use some of the stuff in our home - I made a decision that if its in our house, it better have a very good reason - and this is the statement that I fall back on if I hesitate.

With my attention being diverted for the last week, I'm still halfway through Day 3 and look forward to ticking it off tomorrow evening. There's 3 boxes of stuff and 1 pile of clothes from Day 2's efforts, and I was simply amazed when I was able to completely empty 4 drawers of the chest in the guest room - I could relocate some other things there and make more room in the hallway cupboard to store our suitcases and spare dining chairs! This is really working!

I've found myself asking those same 5 words in other areas of life too - and I'm becoming more interested in just what sort of nasties are in our everyday products. Starting with toiletries, I'll slowly be replacing each chemically laden product with a clean, green alternative and I look forward to sharing my results with you. A couple of brands I've got my eye on are trilogy, grown and sukin. These are high on my list as they are all Australian/ New Zealand products, all avoid some of the most infamous chemicals such as parabens and sodium lauryl sulphates, and they have recognised their responsibility to incorporate environmentally friendly, recyclable packaging across their ranges.
From skincare to cleaning, and the kitchen and laundry products are next on my hitlist - we've been pretty good at choosing biodegradeable dishwashing and laundry detergents, however we've been buying Seventh Generation - an American brand. Upon closer inspection of the cleaning aisle at Passionfoods, I discovered 2 eco-friendly brands which are made right here in Victoria - we'll be working our way through these ranges first!

So my journey of informed decisions will continue, and I look forward to sharing it.

      Monday, July 19, 2010

      Less really is more

It's funny what a collector I became when preparing for our wedding. I thought I needed it all - beautiful lingerie for every single day, a new dress for every occasion and not 1 but 4 swimsuits! Needless to say my darling husband was the one dragging my suitcase all over the place, not me!
Since we have returned home and settled into married life, a strange thing has happened. I no longer need so much stuff. I don't want to accumulate more stuff that I can't use and with the help of my new guardian angels, Unclutterer and zenhabits I look forward to removing all the extra stuff around our house over the coming weeks. Just because it looks nice or fits well, doesn't mean you need it. Just because it fits in the cupboard, doesn't make it useful. I'll be selling some select items on eBay but the rest of it will be donated to our local Savers store. Unlike clean-outs I've had in the past, I'm being particularly ruthless. I even considered taking out all the clothes in my wardrobe and only putting things back as I wore them, over a series of months, to truly see what I can live without. Now I don't think I'll need to go to this extreme but I did happen to find an article with this exact plan called The Clean-Slate guide to Simplicity when I bumped into zenhabits the first time the next day! Uncanny!

So, with the following definition from Unclutterer ringing in my ears, last Wednesday I began my new role as an Unclutterer...

An unclutterer is someone who chooses to live without the distractions
that get in the way of a remarkable life.

By the time I'd gotten home I'd already thought of things all over the house I could clear out so my first evening - though very productive, was a bit scattered. So the next morning I came up with a strategic plan to cover the whole house - room by room....let's see how I'm going!

I only wish I remembered to take before and after photos - the difference is already tremendous! It should be much easier to keep our place clean too...

      Day
      Declutter goal
      Outcome
      Day 1
      Wed 14/7
      4 earrings
      5 books
      2 nail polishes
      8 nail polishes
      10 books
      at least 8 earrings
      1 bangle
      5 broochs
      2 hair stylers
      Old prescription medication
      Unused bathroom products

And downstairs – 4 old magazines and a set of coasters, a little teacup and saucer and a set of salt &  pepper shakers
I had already been thinking of certain items I could get rid of all day – so there wasn’t much concentrated activity but
it was a good taste of some areas where I know that more can go.
      Day 2
      Thurs 15/7
Nightstand and centre drawer of dressing table
      Drawers in guest room
Completed nightstand – I wasn’t using any of the two bottom drawers so I have moved some clothes into them and most of the items (which were keepsakes) are going into a box with my treasure chest of old jewellery.
Top of dresser – seriously culled lots of jewellery. I was ruthless. Lots to give away – including 2 watches to friends if they want them. I’m keeping a small selection of necklaces and bracelets that I received as gifts when I was younger. I’m OK with that – they won’t clog up my useful jewellery box space as they are going in the roof.
Centre drawer – threw out some old things, moved candles downstairs, consolidated 2 boxes of matches and rearranged the inserts so Trav and I have one each for fragrances. deodorants stay at the front. Roll ons will fit better!

Trav cleaned out his nightstand and  bathroom basket – there were 4 bags of rubbish to throw out!

Didn’t get to guest room but had a really productive evening. as I was putting clothes in the other drawers, I came across at least 10 more tops that I could give away without even blinking – and reduced my pj selection too. Who needs that many pjs??

I also diverted from the original plan and pulled out a bowl and plate from hutch to give away.

      Day 3
Hallway cupboards – shoes, bags, clothes. make the spare dining chairs fit in there! – straw bag, toiletry bag, pink bridesmaid dress.

      Day 4
      Bookcases

      Day 5
Rest of study – desk, sewing desk, cupboards

      Day 6
Clothes in my drawers – singlets? pjs? socks?

      Day 7
Clothes on top of my cupboard

      Day 8
      Clothes in my wardrobe

      Day 10
      Buffet, Hutch and entrance
      -          ikea swirly platter, a vase or two? blue ikea bowl and plate

      Day 11
Have another look around the kitchen – we did a pretty good job of this a few months ago and don’t think we’ve accumulated any extras, but it’s worth a once-over!

If you can't find time, make it!

Over the past few months, I've been considering what I need less of in my life. Where am I wasting my time? What things are taking up my time that perhaps didn't in the past? What do I want to do with my time instead?

Lots of reasons to use or dodge Facebook can be found all over the net like these ones here, here and here. There's lots of good ones but basically I'm tired of logging onto Facebook to find out what my closest friends are doing. I miss phone calls and emails. So today I cleaned up my profile, removed apps, Likes, tags and my photo albums. I've let everyone know how to find me and will check my profile for the last time next Friday night. I'll give it 3 months. I'm not being anti-social - in fact I'm trying to be more social. I've already banned the website at work and am looking forward to this little experiment!
